How Often Should You Pump Your Septic Tank?

The rule of thumb, and the factors that mean you should pump sooner.

The rule of thumb

For most North Carolina households, every 3 to 5 years keeps a septic tank healthy. But that is a range, not a promise - the right interval depends on your home.

Pump sooner if you have

  • A bigger household or a smaller (1,000-gallon) tank
  • A garbage disposal, which adds solids fast
  • An older system near the end of its life
  • High water use, guests, or a rental property

Why stretching it is a bad bet

When solids build past the tank's capacity, they get pushed out into the drain field - the one part you really don't want to clog. A $400 pump-out on schedule protects a drain field that costs thousands to replace. It is the cheapest insurance in the whole system. If you can't remember your last pumping, it is time.
